About Bodh Gaya
Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Lord Gautam Buddha. It is an international tourist destination where more than a million tourists and entrepreneurs from all across the world visit. It is connected with the major cities by all the major means of transport. Mahabodhi temple where Lord Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree is a declared UNESCO heritage site. Almost all the Buddhist countries have their architectural representation in the form of temples at Bodh Gaya. Other attractions near Bodh Gaya include the historical city of Gaya and the excavated remains of the Nalanda University. The historical city of Gaya is sanctified in the Jain, Hindu, and Buddhist religions. Nalanda University located at 80 kms away from Bodhgaya, was an education hub from 500 CE to 1200 CE. Developed under the patronage of the Gupta dynasty, it was the first international residential university in the world which hosted about 1,500 teachers and scholars, and about 10,000 students, in its peak years. Famous Chinese traveler, Hiuen Tsang was also a student at this reputed university.
